THE POSTDOC EXPERIENCE IN UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO

Our young and talented lecturer, Dr. Nurul Shazini Ramli from the Department of Food Science is temporary leaving us to pursue her postdoc experience in Japan.

Postdocs are scientists with doctorates who temporarily conduct publishable research under the supervision of a more senior scholar.

Recipient of a scholarship from the Malaysian government, Dr. Nurul Shazini today is conducting cutting-edge postdoc research on health nutrition in one of the most prestige public universities in Japan, University of Tokyo.

Dr. Nurul Shazini works in the Health Nutrition lab of Professor Dr. Hisanori Kato, a place that is unique because, she says, it focuses on exploring effective uses of nutrients and other food components for health throughout life. This goal is addressed by making full use of molecular nutrition and omics technologies such as genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics. The Health Nutrition Laboratory aims to elucidate the factors leading to challenging problems of the aging society including locomotive syndrome, frailty, and sarcopenia, and to find ways to prevent them through nutritional approaches. Overall, the mission of the lab is to give comprehensive understanding of food function.

“I am working on identification of common genetic variations associated with macronutrient consumptions in human as well as elucidation of underlying mechanism of nutrient in gut microbiota modulation. My research involves multifaceted studies of food for achievement of healthy longevity.” she explains.

“I hope to be involved in developments that improve people’s lives. In the future, I’d also like to work on projects to discover the relationship between nutrition and complex diseases (particularly metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes as well as other degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease),” Dr. Shazini says.
